At the end of 2021, the US Surgeon General declared a youth mental health crisis across the US. While the scope of the issue is enormous and lacking a single root cause, digital literacy can be a tool in our nation’s toolbox for how we can help young people navigate the news and social media. Join this discussion to learn more about the connection between media literacy and mental health, and what media literacy interventions can have a positive impact.
Digital citizenship learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. It occurs at home, in conversations online, with friends, at the library and many other moments. in libraries, at playgrounds, with friends and in quiet, contemplative moments. How can the larger school community help students learn to be safe and positive digital citizens?
This webinar will present some ideas for learning digital citizenship skills across a local community. Presented in partnership by Carrie Rogers-Whitehead, founder of Digital Respons-Ability and Sylvia Stein, the founder of StickTogether, attendees will leave with both out-of-the-box and out-of-the-classroom ideas.

Group Chat: Teens and Adults in Conversation
As part of our By/With/For Youth: Inspiring Next Gen Public Media Audiences project, the Joan Ganz Cooney Center presents three conversations between experts and youth around topics in youth digital culture, moderated by educator Dwight Dunston. Together, adults and teens explore issues like what kids are watching online, where they get their news, how they maintain a sense of well-being in the digital world, and what it’s like to collaborate with public media professionals to produce content.
Join Children’s Media Association, the LEGO Group, Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop and NAMLE for an interactive virtual session where we will investigate the questions: what is children’s digital well-being? why is it important? and how can we all build towards it? We’ll share new research and plans from the Responsible Innovation in Technology for Children (RITEC) initiative and hear from experts in child development, gaming—and you!
