SUMMARY:Teaching about Mis/Disinformation in Early Elementary Grades Using Constructivist Media Decoding
DESCRIPTION:How can we introduce in grades K-3 the type of deep questioning and critical thinking skills necessary for all students to evaluate the media messages they see\, read and hear in today’s world? Highlighting dozens of free lessons from Project Look Sharp that use the kinds of media children already have in their lives (food packages\, movies\, YouTube videos\, etc.)\, this highly interactive presentation will demonstrate how inquiry-based\, student-centered\, curriculum-driven media analysis can engage even the youngest students in questions about what’s true and what’s not. \nREGISTER HERE

DESCRIPTION:Come meet author Mark Kurlansky\, author of “Big Lies: From Socrates to Plato\,” and educators from across the globe and share your thoughts on big lies from history! “Educator Voice” is not your typical webinar. We ask that you turn on your screens since we are our proud of the work teachers do\, and believe fully in the need of showing it off and sharing how smart\, courageous and amazing educators and school staff are. Our guests come on because they WANT to hear directly from teachers/staff and what they are going through currently trying to help students learn and make the world a better place. All are welcome\, but you get the boot if you are disrespectful. Mark Kulansky\, journalist and best-selling author\, is not to be missed. You will have fun and he will make you laugh and think. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Representations of Teachers in the Media across time and space
DESCRIPTION:Abbott Elementary is out to bust all the typical teacher tropes that have manifested in popular culture across time. As Marshall (2016) writes\, teachers have predominantly been represented in popular culture as saintly\, un-intellectual nurturers\, or the opposite\, as monsters\, all the while presenting a misogynistic view of the teaching profession that’s dominated by women. In this presentation\, media literacy educators/scholars\, Dr. Stephanie Flores-Koulish and Sr. Rose Pacatte will examine various depictions of teacher depictions in the media\, past and present using the critical lenses of media literacy education\, and discuss the implications of such depictions on the profession and especially the impact on this female-dominated profession. \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Media Literacy and the Civic Mission of Schools
DESCRIPTION:Our country and constitutional democracy can only thrive when schools prepare the next generation to be literate and independent consumers and producers of news and media. That mission can only be achieved when schools first reflect a broader civic mission. For decades\, that mission has been underresourced in terms of both funding and time on topic. The bipartisan Civics Secures Democracy Act offers an opportunity to invest a billion dollars a year for the next five years in civics and U.S. history\, explicitly calling out functions of media literacy. Come learn about how the media literacy community serves as a linchpin to getting this bill to the finish line and reclaiming the civic mission of schools. \nREGISTER HERE
