DESCRIPTION:Join this free documentary screening co-hosted by the Alaska Teen Media Institute\, UAA Department of Journalism and Public Communications\, The Northern Light and KRUA. Open to all students\, staff\, faculty and the community. Doors open at 6 p.m. The film begins at 6:30 and will be followed by a panel discussion on the film and Media Literacy. \nAbout the Film \n“TRUST ME” shows how an avalanche of biased news and misinformation is undermining trust in society. This drives fear\, which promotes racism\, political polarization and mental health disorders. When fear goes up it erodes trust. When people don’t trust each other\, they don’t help each other and progress stalls. Sensational media take advantage of our survival instincts to earn more clicks and ad revenue with shocking headlines that we enable each time we share. “TRUST ME” uses compelling human stories\, facts and expert voices to show empirical realities and the right way to consume media. \nAbout the Hosts \nThe Alaska Teen Media Institute is a local organization that provides teens and young adults with the tools and training needed to produce stories and with the opportunity for their stories – told in their own voices – to be shared through a variety of media. ATMI believes the teen perspective is valuable and is under-represented. ATMI’s News Literacy Program provides young people with information and skills on discerning reliable forms of media in order to make informed decisions for themselves and their community. \nThe Department of Journalism and Public Communications teaches students the skills of multimedia journalism and strategic communications — skills that are required in almost every field — media\, government\, business\, health and science. \nThe Northern Light and KRUA are the University of Alaska Anchorage’s student news and radio organizations.

SUMMARY:UNESCO Chair in Democracy\, Global Citizenship and Transformative Education (DCMET) Symposium 2023
DESCRIPTION:Structure\, Organization and Activities\nThe 2023 International Symposium will involve a hybrid series of presentations\, dialogues\, keynotes\, cultural activities and engagements over a four-day period focused on Peace\, Culture and Social Justice. \nEverything will be disseminated open-access via ZOOM and Facebook Live\, then uploaded to DCMÉT’s YouTube channel with the consent of presenters. \nWe are planning for roughly 18 sessions in English and 7 in French and 10 in Spanish. We will also have approximately10 sessions in Korean as well as 4 keynotes that will be simultaneously interpreted. \nThe one-hour sessions will be structured as dialogues with 3-4 presenters around themes that will be cultivated and developed through several meetings before the Symposium. A central focus will be on peace\, culture and social justice with critical overlapping analysis and engagement emphasizing overlapping themes\, such as democracy\, global citizenship\, transformative education\, Indigenous knowledge\, rights\, development and reconciliation\, social media\, the environment\, and solidarity. \nTwo program coordinators for each language are responsible for developing the sessions\, and they are also members of the Organizing Committee\, which will be led by Paul R. Carr (the Chair-holder of the UNESCO Chair DCMÉT) and co-chaired by Gina Thésée (the Co-Chair of the UNESCO Chair DCMET). There is also a local organizing committee in Seoul\, and a communications sub-committee that will coordinate media relations and dissemination in the four languages ​​of the Symposium.

SUMMARY:Ask\, Interview\, Write: Journalistic Strategies to Engage Secondary ELA Students in Media Literacy and Civics Education
DESCRIPTION:Language arts teachers are increasingly asked to teach media literacy and civics\, as seen in the 2021 NCTE Report of the Task Force on Critical Media Literacy and in the 2022 NCTE Civics Guide for Teachers. In addition to meeting required instructional standards for reading\, writing\, listening\, speaking and grammar conventions through literary and informative texts\, teachers also want to motivate and engage their students with authentic inquiry. How can they manage it all? \nJournalistic learning is a project-based approach that integrates media literacy and civic engagement to activate student voice and choice in the general language arts classroom. This research-based\, standards-aligned approach is designed to allow students to tap their own interests and concerns in order to research\, write and publish ethical\, informative\, place-based articles about issues they find relevant to their communities and lived experiences. Teachers guide students to practice research strategies for identifying mis- and disinformation while learning about local news media. The approach’s key elements are distilled in Language Arts in Action: Engaging Secondary Students with Journalistic Strategies (W.W. DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence has led journalists to question how they’ll report. While the benefits of AI include simplifying complex topics and assisting with questions for interviews\, many find it can’t always be trusted. \nAt this event presented in partnership with the Center for Communication\, experts in the field from SmartNews\, The Information\, The Center for Public Integrity\, Vanity Fair and more discuss how journalists can use artificial intelligence as a resource\, while also being mindful of its limitations. \nThis event will take place in person at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library on the 7th Floor.
