SUMMARY:Their Ad\, Your Vote: A Media Literacy Look at Political Advertising
DESCRIPTION:Political ads are everywhere this election season — on TV\, in our feeds\, and in our mailboxes. This session with Dr. Elizabeth Ortiz of Media Literacy Week Lehigh Valley takes a closer look at real political ads and practices asking the questions media literacy is built on: Who made this\, and who paid for it? What techniques is it using to get my attention and my vote? What’s left out? Students and families will leave with simple tools for evaluating political messages together at home. Follows the Political Pulse Live! broadcast at Northampton Community College’s Fowler Family Southside Center\, 511 East 3rd Street\, Bethlehem\, PA 18015.

SUMMARY:Teaching Students to Think Critically When Chatbots Agree with Them: Metacognition and Media Literacy in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:School librarian\, Brooke Baker\, and Project Look Sharp co-director\, Chris Sperry\, explore adolescent metacognition and media literacy in the age of AI. REGISTRATION REQUIRED. \n\n\nPrimary Audience: this webinar is designed for middle school and high school educators and librarians; library media specialists; teacher librarians; school administrators; college faculty; and librarians. \nIt’s easy to question an answer we disagree with\, but what happens when a chatbot tells us exactly what we want to hear? This interactive webinar explores how the affirming and validating nature of conversational AI can make critical evaluation more difficult for students. We’ll connect emerging research on adolescent AI use with Project Look Sharp’s approach to metacognition and Constructivist Media Decoding\, then put those strategies into practice with a hands-on media literacy activity. Participants will leave with Project Look Sharp resources and practical ways to help students pause\, question\, and think critically about AI responses–even when those responses feel right.

SUMMARY:Navigating the Manosphere: Harmful Online Masculinity Content and Youth
DESCRIPTION:What are boys and young men finding online when they search for advice about masculinity\, relationships\, and fitness — or even just scroll through their “for you” feed? Algorithms and persuasive influencers can quickly guide young men into the “manosphere” — a network of online communities where healthy self-improvement tips often mix with rigid\, exaggerated\, misogynistic\, and harmful views on gender and relationships. \nWhile the content of the manosphere varies and may sometimes appear harmless at first glance\, prolonged exposure can shape young people’s real-world behavior\, attitudes toward women\, mental health\, relationships\, and even physical health. \nJoin Children and Screens for our next #AskTheExperts webinar “Navigating the Manosphere: Harmful Online Masculinity Content and Youth” on Wednesday\, October 28 at 5:30pm ET on Zoom. Expert panelists will discuss the pathways that lead youth to the manosphere\, the impact of engagement in these spaces on their beliefs\, behavior\, and well-being\, and how parents and educators can help young people critically evaluate the messages they encounter while supporting healthier expressions of masculinity.

SUMMARY:Decoding Your Feed: The Difference Between News and Content
DESCRIPTION:Journalism is what happens before you see the content: reporting\, verification\, editing\, legal review\, and corrections. Anyone can post\, but journalism makes sure that what you see is accurate\, credible\, and fair. In this Media Literacy Week program\, 7th and 8th graders learn to distinguish journalism from content that feels like “news” by hearing from Reuters staff about how they research\, analyze\, and distribute information.

SUMMARY:Learning to See Through Media: Finland's Media Literacy Lessons for America
DESCRIPTION:Finland ranks first in Europe’s Media Literacy Index\, and Finns’ trust in news remains among the highest in the world. In the US\, trust in news has fallen to 25%. What can American classrooms learn from Finland? \nStephen Lee\, Co-Founder and CEO of Augmented Media Literacy\, has lived in Finland for about 25 years. In 2018\, he started a project with Finnish journalists and a PhD researcher to help people read media better. In this talk\, he shares what Finnish students learn about the news\, and four ways to see through media in anything you read: spotting clickbait headlines\, noticing emotional language\, checking sources and viewpoints\, and comparing coverage across outlets. \nEducators who attend will be the first to see and have the chance to try the Augmented Media Literacy Chrome extension beta for free. \nThe extension is based on the last 8 years of development in cooperation with teams in the US and Finland. We are excited to show you what our research has led us to and get your feedback. \nVisit https://augmentedmedialiteracy.com for more information and to join the waitlist for the tool. \nRegister (free): https://forms.gle/Ytk89UL7eARA1ZhM7 \nWatch live: https://www.youtube.com/live/WGVoOJPs_pU \nContact: contact@augmentedmedialiteracy.com

SUMMARY:Walk the Line to Build Active Listening and Reflective Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Walk the Line is an embodied\, discussion-based activity in which participants hold a “standing conversation” about media\, technology\, and society. Facilitators read aloud a series of provocative prompts. Discuss statements like “Social media has done more harm than good for teenagers” or “Companies should be legally responsible for what their algorithms recommend.” See how participants physically move to a spot along a line or continuum that represents their position\, from strong agreement to strong disagreement. \nOnce everyone has taken a stand\, the facilitator invites people from different points on the line to explain their reasoning\, and participants may move as they hear ideas that shift their thinking. Because opinions become visible and movement is encouraged\, the activity surfaces the genuine disagreement that lives inside any group and makes changing your mind a normal\, low-stakes act rather than a concession. Through participation\, learners will: \n(1) articulate and defend a personal position on a contested issue involving media\, technology\, and society; \n(2) recognize the range of viewpoints held within their own community and identify the values\, experiences\, and evidence that shape them; \n(3) practice active listening and respectful disagreement by responding directly to peers’ reasoning; \n(4) evaluate how framing and word choice in a prompt can shape an opinion; and \n(5) reflect on their own openness to revising a belief in light of new arguments or information. \nIn this session\, you’ll learn how to use this instructional strategy in face-to-face and online learning contexts!

SUMMARY:Influence\, Authenticity\, and a Gendered Algorithm
DESCRIPTION:Social media promises visibility and connection\, yet these systems amplify some voices while silencing others. In this Media Literacy Week lecture\, Dr. Elizabeth R. Ortiz ’01 explores how digital platforms reward certain performances of femininity and “authenticity” while constraining how women and other marginalized creators show up\, speak out\, and share their lives online. She invites us to see media literacy as a way to resist\, redefine\, and reclaim visibility in these systems built to keep us scrolling.
