SUMMARY:Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas
DESCRIPTION:The Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas is committed to democratic ideals and social justice values. We relate to the media as a dialectical space for criticism and celebration. The media are complex tools whose effects do not always coincide with the intentions. The media can promote democratic participation\, support social justice\, and offer considerable joy\, but they can hinder democracy\, ignite violence\, and manipulate individuals and society. Our goal for this conference is to facilitate critical discourse about our mediated society with the intention to deepen our understanding and support each other’s work in the transformation of society\, to make it socially fairer and environmentally sustainable.

SUMMARY:Free Screening of "Trust Me" Documentary
DESCRIPTION:Join this free documentary screening co-hosted by the Alaska Teen Media Institute\, UAA Department of Journalism and Public Communications\, The Northern Light and KRUA. Open to all students\, staff\, faculty and the community. Doors open at 6 p.m. The film begins at 6:30 and will be followed by a panel discussion on the film and Media Literacy. \nAbout the Film \n“TRUST ME” shows how an avalanche of biased news and misinformation is undermining trust in society. This drives fear\, which promotes racism\, political polarization and mental health disorders. When fear goes up it erodes trust. When people don’t trust each other\, they don’t help each other and progress stalls. Sensational media take advantage of our survival instincts to earn more clicks and ad revenue with shocking headlines that we enable each time we share. “TRUST ME” uses compelling human stories\, facts and expert voices to show empirical realities and the right way to consume media. \nAbout the Hosts \nThe Alaska Teen Media Institute is a local organization that provides teens and young adults with the tools and training needed to produce stories and with the opportunity for their stories – told in their own voices – to be shared through a variety of media. ATMI believes the teen perspective is valuable and is under-represented. ATMI’s News Literacy Program provides young people with information and skills on discerning reliable forms of media in order to make informed decisions for themselves and their community. \nThe Department of Journalism and Public Communications teaches students the skills of multimedia journalism and strategic communications — skills that are required in almost every field — media\, government\, business\, health and science. \nThe Northern Light and KRUA are the University of Alaska Anchorage’s student news and radio organizations.

SUMMARY:Debunking the Disguises: Misinformation\, AI\, and Social Media
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Alexa Volland\, Senior Manager of Educator Professional Learning\, The News Literacy Project; and Brittney Smith\, Senior Manager of Education Partnerships\, The News Literacy Project \nSponsored by News Literacy Project \nRegister Here \nLearn more about viewing the live presentation and the recording\, earning your CE certificate\, and using our new accessibility features. \nMany young people today rely on social media for news and information\, and as generative artificial intelligence becomes more common\, it too is playing a role in today’s information landscape. The problem is that AI and social media can be as misleading as a haunted house—full of tricks (not treats)\, and often\, misinformation! \nBy giving students the tools and skills to develop critical thinking skills\, educators can help arm their students against this scary situation (and not just during Halloween season). Join us for an edWebinar focused on helping your students see through falsehoods disguised as facts and AI masquerading as reality. \nHear from the News Literacy Project’s AI and social media expert Alexa Volland and learn techniques for giving students the skills to navigate even the most bewildering digital environments. We’ll also explore free resources\, such as Checkology lessons and classroom exercises\, for determining the credibility of evidence and sources as well as best practices for teaching about misinformation and conspiratorial thinking. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to middle and high school teachers\, librarians\, and school and district leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

SUMMARY:Ask\, Interview\, Write: Journalistic Strategies to Engage Secondary ELA Students in Media Literacy and Civics Education
DESCRIPTION:Language arts teachers are increasingly asked to teach media literacy and civics\, as seen in the 2021 NCTE Report of the Task Force on Critical Media Literacy and in the 2022 NCTE Civics Guide for Teachers. In addition to meeting required instructional standards for reading\, writing\, listening\, speaking and grammar conventions through literary and informative texts\, teachers also want to motivate and engage their students with authentic inquiry. How can they manage it all? \nJournalistic learning is a project-based approach that integrates media literacy and civic engagement to activate student voice and choice in the general language arts classroom. This research-based\, standards-aligned approach is designed to allow students to tap their own interests and concerns in order to research\, write and publish ethical\, informative\, place-based articles about issues they find relevant to their communities and lived experiences. Teachers guide students to practice research strategies for identifying mis- and disinformation while learning about local news media. The approach’s key elements are distilled in Language Arts in Action: Engaging Secondary Students with Journalistic Strategies (W.W. Norton\, 2023)\, authored by three of this panels’ presenters. \n  \n\nWhen you register as a 2023 U.S. Media Literacy Week participant here\, you’ll automatically be registered for this event.

There are over 100 million people over the age of 50 in the United States and by 2030\, 1 in 6 people in the world will be aged 60 years or older. What unique challenges do older adults face when navigating the complicated technology and information landscape? What support and resources are currently available to them and what more do they need? Join us for a discussion with the AARP and Trend Micro\, two organizations focused on understanding and addressing these very questions. \n\nWhen you register as a 2023 U.S. Media Literacy Week participant here\, you’ll automatically be registered for this event.
