SUMMARY:Watchdogs\, Gatekeepers\, or Referees? The Media’s Role in Democratic Elections
DESCRIPTION:As the 2024 election season approaches\, we are again faced with an onslaught on information\, misinformation\, and disinformation about candidates\, issues\, and the election process itself. What impact\, if any\, do the media have on U.S. elections? How can we strive to educate ourselves and others with the best information to make informed choices? At this panel session\, the authors of the recent article “Prebunking Election Fraud: Strategies to Confront Conspiracy Theories” (in Social Education) will provide a brief primer of the different roles the media plays in politics and how citizens can contextualize and interpret information from various media sources.

SUMMARY:Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas
DESCRIPTION:The Critical Media Literacy Conference of the Americas is committed to democratic ideals and social justice values. We relate to the media as a dialectical space for criticism and celebration. The media are complex tools whose effects do not always coincide with the intentions. The media can promote democratic participation\, support social justice\, and offer considerable joy\, but they can hinder democracy\, ignite violence\, and manipulate individuals and society. Our goal for this conference is to facilitate critical discourse about our mediated society with the intention to deepen our understanding and support each other’s work in the transformation of society\, to make it socially fairer and environmentally sustainable.
