SUMMARY:In Our Media Literacy Era: Fandom\, Politics\, and the Power of Critical Support
DESCRIPTION:This Media Literacy Week\, we’re talking fandom\, politics\, and critical thinking\, all through the lens of Taylor Swift. The Media Education Lab and Swifties4Hope team up to explore how the worlds of fandom and politics overlap and diverge. Together\, we’ll reflect on how we can support our favorite political candidates passionately while still thinking independently. \nSince our girl knows Aristotle\, it only feels right to remind ourselves that\, in his words\, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” We’ll put that idea into practice\, since being both a fan and being an informed citizen start with asking good questions. Join us as we apply the 5 Critical Questions of Media Literacy to some of our favorite Taylor Swift lyrics.

SUMMARY:Seeing Is Believing: 19th Century Hoaxes in American Media

SUMMARY:Your News Diet & Your Mental Health in an AI Driven World
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to social media and other channels\, we see more news than ever before. It’s easy to let things pass us by without reflecting on or thinking critically about what we see. But as the information ecosystem becomes more complex with AI generated content\, blurred lines between fact and fiction make intentional\, reflective engagement with media all the more critical. This session will help you understand all the ways you interact with the news\, reflect on what you learned (or didn’t learn) from those interactions\, and understand how consuming the information made you feel. We’ll then explore how news consumption is related to mental health\, and review strategies to help you strike a healthy balance that works for you.

SUMMARY:In Libraries We Trust: How Libraries Can Lead the Way in Fighting Misinformation
DESCRIPTION:Library patrons are bombarded with information daily\, but the line between fact and fiction is often blurred. Misinformation and bias are rampant on social media\, eroding the public’s confidence in what they read online. Spam\, clickbait\, and malicious websites masquerade as legitimate news sources. AI-generated content and the increasing commodification of search engines like Google further complicate independent information seeking. Where do people turn when they need objective information? According to recent research\, libraries rank higher than Congress\, the Supreme Court\, and the police when it comes to public trust. Trustworthy information is critical for patrons of all ages\, from public school students dipping their toes into the world of learning to retirees researching important issues of the day. In this American Libraries Live webinar\, sponsored by SirsiDynix’s CloudSource\, learn more about the ongoing fight against misinformation—and how libraries can help patrons come out on top. \nTogether\, we will: \n• Explore what the data says about patrons’ perceptions of libraries \n• Discuss what patrons report they need most \n• Demonstrate how CloudSource OA can help by providing quality\, peer-reviewed open access and open educational resources suitable for every patron at every library – with one click and no authentication required \nOur featured panelist: Maryśka Connolly\, CloudSource director of partnerships and communications
