Learning to See Through Media: Finland’s Media Literacy Lessons for America

October 27 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm UTC-5

Finland ranks first in Europe’s Media Literacy Index, and Finns’ trust in news remains among the highest in the world. In the US, trust in news has fallen to 25%. What can American classrooms learn from Finland?

Stephen Lee, Co-Founder and CEO of Augmented Media Literacy, has lived in Finland for about 25 years. In 2018, he started a project with Finnish journalists and a PhD researcher to help people read media better. In this talk, he shares what Finnish students learn about the news, and four ways to see through media in anything you read: spotting clickbait headlines, noticing emotional language, checking sources and viewpoints, and comparing coverage across outlets.

Educators who attend will be the first to see and have the chance to try the Augmented Media Literacy Chrome extension beta for free.

The extension is based on the last 8 years of development in cooperation with teams in the US and Finland. We are excited to show you what our research has led us to and get your feedback.
