Fake News, Real Teens: Problems and Possibilities

Event Details:
Sunday, November 4th, 1:00 PM
Albany Public Library
Washington Ave Branch, Large Auditorium
161 Washington Ave | Albany, NY

Event Description:
Fake News, Real Teens: Problems and Possibilities

The first of a pair of forums examining the impact of news media on young people, and seeking ways to address the very real concerns in this area. These will be intergenerational dialogues open to community members of all ages, connecting national questions about news and truth with the specific media habits and experiences of local teens. Through full group discussions and smaller breakout sessions we will take a look at how these issues affect our community, then come together to share and explore possibilities for change.

First Forum: Problems
The world of journalism has changed drastically in the past several years, especially for young people. Every day we gain further evidence of the widespread impact of fake news, which has been shown to be far more harmful to teens. In this, the first of two community forums, we will explore the causes and effects of this and begin to explore possible solutions in an open discussion connecting scholars, journalists, and community members.

“Fake News, Real Teens” is a program of the Albany Public Library in partnership with Youth FX, made possible by a Humanities New York Action Grant and with support from the Albany Public Library Foundation.
