Event Description:
Are you having a hard time separating the signal from the noise? We encounter so much information every day, it can feel like drinking from a fire hose! What can you do to figure out what news is trustworthy- especially this close to an election? Jefferson College Library invites the campus community and general public to a panel discussion called ‘How to Spot Fake News in an Election Year’ on October 30, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the library. This panel and short presentation address media literacy and its applications to the democratic process. How can voters educate themselves on candidates, and sort through biased political ads, misinformation, and other so-called ‘fake news?’ What should you watch out for ahead of the mid-term election, and how can you figure out what news is reliable? Join your local librarians, Elizabeth Steffen, Donnell Probst, and Joe Kohlburn as they give you pointers, and discuss the political, social, and technological background for ‘fake news,’ and most importantly what you can do to become a more informed citizen.
The event begins with a short presentation by Donnell Probst of Gateway Media Literacy Partners (and Jefferson College Library- Arnold), followed by a panel discussion, and wrapping up with librarians addressing your questions.
